The 2016 Toronto International Arts Festival International (TAAFI) kicks off today starting with three workshop sessions followed by both a VIP Party and the opening ceremonies, which includes a screening of the animated feature film "Spark".
The Canadian Animation Blog will be on site, and Grayden will be coordinating photography coverage for the festival over the weekend. Photos from the festival will start going up on the blog later today.
“THREE TOONERS”: CARTOON THE HANNA-BARBERA WAY
Hanna-Barbera’s Tooners want to conduct a ‘“concerto” of storyboarding and character design, but they can't do it without an orchestra! Whether you're more comfortable playing the Cintiq or composing with graphite, the Tooners will teach you how to “toon” in the spirit of Hanna-Barbera. How do you come up with gags and story structure the Hanna-Barbera way? How do you make Fred Flintstone look good enough to yell "Yabba-Dabba-Do?"
Willie Ito and Tony Benedict have the answers in the form of anecdotes, live storyboarding, design demonstrations and personalized draw-overs! Come in a novice, and leave with a certificate from the art academy of Bedrock! Tony and Willie will also be Skyping in their pal Jerry Eisenberg all the way from L.A. for some Jetson's first hand knowledge.
Jerry Eisenberg - Producer, Animator, Storyboard artist, Character Designer
Tony Benedict - Writer, Producer, Director, Storyboard Artist

MICHEL GAGNÉ: NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF SPECIAL FX
Animator Michel Gagné will focus on the core elements of effects animation and its relation to motion pictures and video games. By providing a sense of what makes quality effects design, this workshop will explore the possibilities of integrating 2D, hand-drawn special effects within 3D CG projects.
Michel will review past works and discuss how it is vital to remain “cutting edge.” He will talk about what it means to be an integral part of a production while working remotely. He will explore the use of new technology, and provide a look at the capabilities for going beyond generic particles, while creating signature effects that are unique and memorable.
