INTERVIEWS - Roddy McManus, NFB Animation Executive Producer

Before the "Get Animated!" Panel convened at OCAD on Nov 1st, 2012 we had a chance to interview Roddy McManus, who is the NFB's Executive Producer for their English-language Animation Studio.

We asked Roddy these questions:
  1. What has been the most difficult part and the most rewarding part of being an NFB executive producer?
  2. Do you feel any pressure running one of the few cultural institutions that Canada is world-renowned for?
  3. You were a co-producer on the animation feature film "Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie." Has that experience helped inform your work at the NFB?
  4. The latest batch of Hot House films are being screened tonight. Can you tell us about the NFB/ONF's Hot House paid animator apprenticeship program?
  5. Can you name one or two relatively unknown Canadian animators that we should watch for in the upcoming years?   A: Claire Blanchet, Malcolm Sutherland
  6. Other countries seem to be able to make profitable animation for various age groups.  Most Canadian animation companies are stuck making shows for kids. How can we change that?
Special thanks to Roddy McManus for making time to do the interview and to the Board of TAAFI and Philippe Blanchard for helping to arrange this interview.

Watch the video below to hear Roddy's responses to these questions.
